About the speaker:
Mats Wahlberg, Ph.D., is associate professor of systematic theology at Umeå University, Sweden, and a member of the Academy of Catholic Theology. In 2021, he was the Aquinas Chair at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum) in Rome.
In his most recent book, Sacrificial Love and the Problem of Evil (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming 2026), Wahlberg presents a theodicy based on the thought of Thomas Aquinas, John of the Cross, and contemporary analytic philosophers. His research interests include arguments for the existence of God, the epistemology of divine revelation, and the dialogue between theology and science (especially the theological implications of evolution). Besides three monographs, he has published numerous articles in journals such as Modern Theology, International Journal of Systematic Theology, International Journal for Philosophy of Religion, Zygon, Angelicum Journal, Nova et Vetera, and First Things. Wahlberg’s research about the problem of evil and evolution has been funded by the John Templeton Foundation.
