Infused Temperance and the Passions - A Summa Reading Group

Zoom

Join Dr. Adam Eitel (University of Dalles) and other students to discuss the infused virtue of temperance and the passions by Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologiae. The group will meet on Mondays and Wednesday between February 17 and March 12 to discuss short readings on the reading group’s theme.

Description:

This online course looks at Thomas Aquinas’s account of the passions and their relationship to infused moral virtue, particularly temperance. Over four weeks, we will explore Aquinas’s account of the nature of the passions, their relation to reason, and their role in the Christian life. The course will also engage current debates related to the spontaneity of the passions and their responsiveness to reason's command. Guided by readings from the Summa theologiae and the Disputed Questions on Truth, participants will examine the theological, psychological, and moral dimensions of infused temperance.
