The Thomistic Institute at Yale University presents a lecture by Fr. Gregory Pine, O.P. of the Thomistic Institute titled “Happiness Cannot Be Had Alone.”

Happiness in insolation is not just difficult, it’s impossible. In this lecture, Fr. Gregory Pine, OP argues that the pursuit of happiness without regard for or relation to other people can only end in disappointment and disillusionment. Drawing on classical thought, Fr. Pine argues that authentic happiness is a “common good,” one that requires the giving and receiving of love among a community of persons. Modern people who pursue happiness as a “private good” do so at their own peril. Happiness cannot be had alone.
