About the Speaker:

A native of Orange, New Jersey, after graduating from Fordham University in 1961 Fr. Daley received a Rhodes Scholarship and studied classics and philosophy at the University of Oxford, and entered the Jesuits shortly after this in 1964. After completing his studies for the priesthood in Frankfurt, he was ordained in 1970 and returned to Oxford for doctoral studies, where he worked under the direction of Henry Chadwick. After completing his DPhil in 1978, he began teaching at Weston School of Theology, where he would remain until 1996 when he came to the University of Notre Dame as the Catherine F. Husking Professor of Theology. A past president of the North American Patristics Society (1997-98), in 2012 he was awarded the Ratzinger Prize for Theology by Pope Benedict XVI. Having been involved in ecumenical work between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches since the 1980’s, and in 2016 was appointed Senior Ecumenical Fellow at the Tantur Ecumenical Institute in Jerusalem.

This colloquium is focused on an area of research that has formed a central part of Fr. Daley’s scholarly work for decades. Beginning with his doctoral work at Oxford, he began to study the development of Patristic Christology extensively, producing a critical edition of the works of Leontius of Byzantium, a sixth century theologian. Over the course of his academic career, Fr. Daley has authored many works on Patristic theology, including The Hope of the Early Church: A Handbook of Patristic Eschatology (Cambridge University, 1991),

In addition to many scholarly articles, Fr. Daley has also edited The Harp of Prophecy: Early Christian Interpretation of the Psalms (University of Notre Dame Press, 2015) and is the translator of numerous works, including Leontius of Byzantium: Complete Works (Oxford University Press, 2017). Most recently, Fr. Daley has authored God Visible: Patristic Christology Reconsidered (Oxford University Press, 2018).

Successful applicants will receive a full tuition scholarship and room and board for the duration of the conference.  A limited number of travel scholarships are also available for select students who do not have access to institutional funding for travel.
