About the lecture:

Why read old books? What can they possibly teach us about life today? As it happens, in times of national and cultural turmoil, sensible people will look for help from wherever they might find it. Drawing on his recently published commentary on the biblical book of Exodus, Dr. Kass will explore its enduring wisdom for human flourishing, both personal and communal.

About the speaker:

Leon R. Kass is Professor Emeritus in the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago and Emeritus Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. Trained in medicine and biochemistry, he has been engaged for over 50 years with ethical and philosophical issues raised by biomedical advance, and, more recently, with broader cultural issues. He taught at St. John’s College and Georgetown University before returning to Chicago where he was for 34 years an award-winning teacher deeply involved in undergraduate education and committed to the study of classic texts. His latest books are Leading a Worthy Life: Finding Meaning in Modern Times; Founding God’s Nation: Reading Exodus; and (with his granddaughter Hannah Mandelbaum) Reading Ruth: Birth, Redemption, and the Way of Israel. From 2002-2005, Dr. Kass was Chairman of the President’s Council on Bioethics. He divides his time between Washington DC and Jerusalem, where he has just become Dean of the Faculty at Shalem College, Israel’s only four-year liberal arts college.
