Join Fr. Thomas Aquinas Pickett (Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology) and other alumni to learn Aquinas’s view whether one can be spiritual and religious. Fr. Thomas Aquinas will navigate prevailing ideas concerning what is spiritual and lead you to the articles in the Summa that shed light on the truth of the human soul and its union with God. The group will meet on Saturdays between October 11 and November 1 to discuss short readings on the reading group’s theme. This reading group is open to those registered in the TI Alumni Program.
Description:
Fragmentation plagues the modern person. For many, this produces a seeming division or tension between “religion” and “spirituality”; the former indicative of formal membership in a church, a defined set of teachings, and distinct practices, the latter pointing to an individual’s quest for purpose, peace, and meaningful experiences. Is such a division accurate and real? In this course, we will examine an alternative approach provided by Saint Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologiae to spirituality and religion. Rather than pitting them against each other, we will see how they are necessary complements to one another in the Christian life.
