Join Prof. Jennifer Frey (University of Tulsa) and other students to discuss Aquinas on sin as presented in the Summa Theologiae. The group will meet on Mondays between October 16 and November 6 to discuss short readings on the reading group’s theme.
Description:
The concept of sin is foundational to Christianity. In this reading group, we will explore how St. Thomas understands the nature of sin as against nature, against reason, and against God. We will explore the special nature of guilt, the different kinds and sources of sin, and how it relates to vice and evil. First, we will start with the necessary background, which is a grasp of Aquinas’s understanding of the will as a rational appetite whose exercise is voluntary, even as it is naturally and ordained to the perfect good (happiness). Next, we will discuss the nature of sin and vice, its subject and causes, and then we move to original sin and its effects.
