Join Prof. Thomas Hibbs (Baylor University) and other students to discuss the the relationship between friendship and human excellence. The group will meet on Mondays and Wednesday between March 24 and April 23 to discuss short readings on the reading group’s theme.
Description:
Both personal and civic friendship are in deep decline in advanced western societies. Coincidentally, reports of loneliness, isolation, and depression have spiked. Ordinary persons have a sense that friendship matters but, lacking the practice and a vocabulary to articulate how and why it matters, they are inarticulate about it. Drawing from the rich reflections on friendship found in the texts of Aristotle, Aquinas, and Catherine of Siena, this course will help us to become more articulate about friendship.

Nicomachean Ethics Books VIII and IX
ST II-IIae q.23 and more
