Retreat Coordinator
Location: Washington, D.C.
Job Description and Responsibilities
The Thomistic Institute is looking for a Retreat Coordinator to work in-person in our D.C. office. This position works in collaboration with other members of the TI team, especially with the Dominican friars who serve as Coordinators for Campus Outreach. The Retreat Coordinator is a member of the Events Team and is supervised by the Conferences & Events Coordinator.
Principal responsibilities include:
Responsibilities:
Planning the Thomistic Institute’s intellectual retreats, held in Washington D.C. and elsewhere (e.g., Texas, California, Ireland, and the UK) in collaboration with the Coordinators for Campus Outreach and TI student chapter leaders. Tasks include coordinating meals, lodging, travel, registration materials, schedules, staffing, and advertising materials.
Supporting the priests in running each weekend retreat by making arrangements for check-in, setting up spaces, recording lectures, organizing meals and socials.
Scheduling, supervising, and training event contract workers.
Regularly communicating with students about upcoming retreats, facilitating applications, and managing commitments.
Representing the TI to our guests and being prepared to explain Catholic liturgical and spiritual practices, the TI and its mission, and the core principles of the Catholic faith and of the Catholic intellectual tradition.
The primary responsibility of this position concerns the planning and logistical support of retreat events, but as time permits, the Retreat Coordinator may participate in retreat liturgies, talks, meals, etc., and engage the students directly. At all times, the Retreat Coordinator should model fidelity to and engagement with the Catholic faith for the students, and, as appropriate, guide them in the faith.
The Retreat Coordinator will occasionally assist with other TI events, conferences, and other tasks, including the annual VERITAS conference.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, excels at planning and running events, and is passionate about working with university students in the service of the Gospel. The candidate is proactive, exercises sound judgment, and is self-motivated, diligent, and detail-oriented, thriving without constant supervision. Applicants should also be reasonably physically fit, since the position frequently involves walking up and down stairs and lifting chairs, tables, bags, and boxes.
Familiarity with Salesforce, Pardot, Canva, and Adobe InDesign is a plus.
A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) is required for this position.
As part of the position, the Retreat Coordinator will be entitled to audit one course (free of charge) per semester at the Dominican House of Studies (e.g., M.A. level classes in philosophy or theology), during office hours.
All members of the TI team are encouraged to participate in the regular liturgical life of the Dominican friars (e.g., step away from work for Mass, the daily midday rosary, the divine office, etc.).
The Thomistic Institute is a research institute of the Pontifical Faculty of the Dominican House of Studies and an apostolate of the Dominican friars of the Province of St. Joseph. The person holding this position will represent the TI and the Dominican friars in public, will bear witness to and teach the Catholic faith, and will at times participate in (and even lead others in) Catholic prayers. Applicants must be practicing Catholics in good standing who assent to and profess the Catholic faith in its entirety as presented in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
This position is a full-time, in-office position in Washington, D.C., and requires full-time residency in the Washington area.
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Benefits: Medical benefits and a retirement plan.
Two weeks of paid vacation; in addition, TI employees receive paid leave for most public holidays and Catholic Solemnities (e.g., the Triduum, St. Joseph’s Day, Immaculate Conception), plus from Dec. 21-Jan. 2 for the Christmas/New Year’s holiday.
